Joseph Sunshine Has a Will of His Own -- and Remembers the Skene

Last October 1st, 2005, the Skene received a substantial donation in memory of long-ago patron Joseph Sunshine. His daughter, Joan Sunshine Davisson and her son Justin, came from California to present a donation and memorial plaque to the Library.
Joseph, an orphan from NYC, was taken in by the Griffin family in Halcott. He left school at an early age but his curious mind led him to visit the Skene frequently during the 1920s and 1930s. He loved non-fiction reading and spent many hours in the Reading Room.
He later met and married Tillie Aronowitz in Fleischmanns and, subsequently, moved to NYC. Joan relates that he read at least 2 to 3 books a week for his entire life. Joseph Sunshine died in California in August 2004.
The plaque was installed in the same Reading Room used by Joseph many years ago. The Skene is particularly humbled and honored that the family of Mr. Sunshine chose to remember his love of reading and his experiences at the Skene -- and that they conveyed this love by their donation and lovely plaque. |
